How to Dehydrate Herbs
Making your own dried herbs would be a very good option for those who love to cook, because the dried herbs are quite expensive when sold in the supermarket. Other than saving you the cost of buying herbs, drying herbs also helps you in preserving your hard earned harvest. Drying the herbs is a very easy process– you can do this at home with just a few common items that can be found around the house: scissors, ribbon/string, colander, hanger and fresh herbs.
The steps for making these dried herbs are as follows:
The first step would be to harvest the herbs once they are fully matured. Then you can use the scissors to cut one half the length of your growth. Some scientists recommend that you can harvest almost seventy five percent of the plant. However so as to get the best produce you will just harvest fifty percent of the herbs. After cutting the herbs arrange them with the stems facing the same direction. You can then place them in the colander.
The second step would be to ensure that the herbs are totally clean, take a moment to wash the herbs in cold water. If you are washing using water that is directly from a tap you should ensure that you do not use too much pressure, because high water pressure it will make the herbs lose their essential flavors thanks to the water crushing the herbs. After rinsing you can then put the herbs colander where they can dry.
The third step would be to cut several pieces of string that are 12 inch in size.
The fourth step would be to tie the herbs using your strings. The bundles should not be that big, they should be almost the size of a pencil eraser.
The fifth step would be to find a place that is both cool and totally dry. An example of such a place would be the basement of your house. You tie the herbs to a hanger and then hang the hanger where the herbs will remain hanging in no contact with anything else. You should keep on checking the herbs on a regular basis to ensure that they do not slip from the ribbons.
The last step is to take down the herbs once they are completely dry. Remove the dried leaves from the stems, and then store the dried leaves in recycled jars or plastic bags.
You can opt to have the leaves crushed or just let them stay in the same way you harvested them, either way they will still retain their nutrients.
